Beveled Glass is clear plate glass which has had all its edges ground and polished at a specific angle. A Beveled Glass window is a mosaic of many individual beveled glass pieces. The angled edges or bevels, cause transmitted light to be prismatically refracted, often creating rainbow-like color effects. During the 19th and early 20th century, all of the numerous and time-consuming steps needed to create each beveled piece was done by hand. Thus, Beveled Glass windows were expensive. In both transmitted and reflected light conditions, an antique hand cut beveled window will produce elegant and eye-catching visual displays.

Glass curves come in 3 main types, annealed, toughened and laminated, although toughened curves can be laminated together, and any combination of curves can be sealed into double glazed units.

Annealed bends are manufactured from raw material flat glass, either float, patterned, wired, tinted and even self-cleaning glass.

The actual curve is produced by applying heat to the flat glass which softens and adopts the shape of a mould which has been produced from template or a CAD drawing. Holes, cut outs and notches are also available, subject to approval.

Annealed bends can be used in single glazed or double glazed applications where safety is not an issue. An example of this would be upper floor window glazing, clock faces or picture frames.

Annealed bends can also be laminated together to produce laminated safety glass bends.

Acid etching is a chemical process used to create texture and designs in glass panels by removing the top surface of specifically selected areas. The process was often applied beautifully to clear plate glass or used on variously-colored “flashed” glass to create dramatic effects of depth and design. Victorian period acid etching was done by coating glass with a resistant material such as paraffin, carving out the design with a sharp instrument, and then dissolving the exposed glass areas with hydrofluoric acid. This process was time consuming and needed to be done with great caution.

Painting of etched glass designs is becoming very popular. The paint, if it is the proper type, adheres well to etched surfaces, giving it great longevity. Picking the right type of paint is as important as the method of application of the paint.

The Picture here, from one of our coloring glasses, shows the effect of coloring where most of the detail is created through etching techniques. It is a multi-stage carved design of a lily that has been colored with airbrushing and other methods.

Toughened glass is made by heating annealed glass to approximately 700 degrees Celsius then cooling the outer surfaces rapidly. This process makes the glass very strong and shock resistant thus more durable.

Bent & Curved Glass uses this toughening technique though a horizontal tempering furnace while bending the glass to specific shapes. It is produced in curved toughening furnaces in India and it is the only one with a tight radius capabilities, it provides a wide range of applications in architectural, commercial and residential installations. The capabilities range from cylindrical single curves, to complex non cylindrical with tight radius curves and tangents.
